Map of Skyrim
The cold, mountainous homeland of the Nords
Where is Skyrim?
Skyrim fills the north of Tamriel, between the Sea of Ghosts and the Jerall Mountains. It is the homeland of the Nords, whose ancestors crossed the sea from Atmora thousands of years ago, and it is the province most players know from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Geography
Skyrim is high, cold and broken up by mountains. The Jerall Mountains wall it off from Cyrodiil to the south, the Velothi Mountains separate it from Morrowind in the east, and the rugged Reach rises along the border with High Rock. The northern coast faces the ice-choked Sea of Ghosts.
At the centre stands the Throat of the World, the tallest mountain in Tamriel, with the monastery of High Hrothgar near its summit. Tundra plains around Whiterun, volcanic hot springs in Eastmarch and golden autumn forests in the Rift give each region its own character.
The province is divided into nine holds, each ruled by a Jarl: Haafingar (Solitude), Hjaalmarch (Morthal), the Pale (Dawnstar), Winterhold, Eastmarch (Windhelm), the Rift (Riften), Whiterun, Falkreath and the Reach (Markarth).
History
In Nord legend, Ysgramor led settlers from Atmora to found the first human kingdoms on the continent. Windhelm, one of the oldest cities in Tamriel, served as their early capital, while in the Fourth Era the High King rules from Solitude.
Skyrim became a core province of the Third Empire. By 4E 201, the year The Elder Scrolls V is set, it was split by a civil war between the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloak rebellion, just as dragons returned to its skies.
Skyrim in the games
Skyrim is one of the provinces players can visit in Arena (1994). It is the setting of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011), and The Elder Scrolls Online covers several of its regions, including Eastmarch, the Rift, Western Skyrim and the Reach.
