Map of Morrowind
The volcanic homeland of the Dark Elves
Where is Morrowind?
Morrowind sits in the north-east corner of Tamriel. It is the homeland of the Dunmer, or Dark Elves, and its heart is Vvardenfell, a large island in the Inner Sea dominated by the volcano Red Mountain.
Geography
The mainland wraps around the Inner Sea. The Velothi Mountains form the western border with Skyrim, and the Valus Mountains rise along the frontier with Cyrodiil. Mournhold, the capital, lies in the south of the mainland, and Necrom, a city of tombs, stands on the eastern coast.
Vvardenfell ranges from the ashlands around Red Mountain to the fungus forests and swamps of its coasts. Giant mushrooms take the place of trees across much of the province.
Solstheim, an island in the Sea of Ghosts, was given to the Dunmer by Skyrim's High King as a refuge after the Red Year, and its port of Raven Rock is a Dunmer town.
History
For thousands of years Morrowind was ruled by the Tribunal, three living gods named Almalexia, Sotha Sil and Vivec, alongside Great Houses such as Redoran, Hlaalu and Telvanni. The Tribunal's power ended around the events of The Elder Scrolls III.
In 4E 5 Red Mountain erupted. The Red Year devastated Vvardenfell, and Argonian forces from Black Marsh then invaded the weakened south of the province.
Morrowind in the games
Arena includes Morrowind as one of its nine provinces. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002) is set on Vvardenfell, its Tribunal expansion moves to Mournhold, and Bloodmoon visits Solstheim, which returns in Skyrim's Dragonborn add-on. The Elder Scrolls Online covers Vvardenfell and the mainland zones of Stonefalls, Deshaan and Bal Foyen.
