Map of Cyrodiil
The Imperial heartland at the centre of Tamriel
Where is Cyrodiil?
Cyrodiil is the central and largest province of Tamriel, and for most of recorded history the seat of the Empire. Its people are the Imperials, and its capital, the Imperial City, stands on an island in Lake Rumare with White-Gold Tower at its centre.
Geography
Cyrodiil borders more provinces than any other: Skyrim, Morrowind, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood and Hammerfell. The Jerall Mountains rise in the north around Bruma.
The west is the Colovian Highlands, with Chorrol, Skingrad and Kvatch, and the Gold Coast around the port of Anvil. The east is the Nibenay Basin, a fertile valley that follows the Niben River south from Lake Rumare past Bravil to Leyawiin and Topal Bay. Most of the province is temperate forest and farmland, while the Blackwood region in the south-east turns to swamp.
History
The Ayleids, or Wild Elves, ruled Cyrodiil until a slave revolt led by Saint Alessia overthrew them in the First Era and founded the first human Empire. The Reman Dynasty and later Tiber Septim's Third Empire also ruled from the Imperial City.
The Oblivion Crisis of 3E 433, when the armies of Mehrunes Dagon poured through gates to Oblivion, ended the Septim line. In the Fourth Era the Mede Dynasty holds a smaller Empire that still governs from White-Gold Tower.
Cyrodiil in the games
Arena lets players visit Cyrodiil's cities. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006) is set entirely in the province and was remastered in 2025. In The Elder Scrolls Online, Cyrodiil is the large player-versus-player war zone, with the Imperial City, the Gold Coast and Blackwood added as later content.
