Map of High Rock
Rival Breton kingdoms on the shores of the Iliac Bay
Where is High Rock?
High Rock is the north-western province of Tamriel and the homeland of the Bretons, a people of mixed human and elven ancestry known for their talent with magic. Instead of one ruler, it is split into many kingdoms that compete for power.
Geography
The province is green, hilly and wet, with the Iliac Bay to the south and the Sea of Ghosts to the north. The Wrothgarian Mountains in the east, along the border with Skyrim, are the traditional home of the Orcs and their city of Orsinium.
There is no single capital. The largest kingdoms are Daggerfall in the west and Wayrest at the eastern end of the bay, with Camlorn, Evermor, Shornhelm, Northpoint and Jehanna among the other realms. The small island of Balfiera in the Iliac Bay holds the ancient Adamantine Tower.
History
The elven Direnni clan ruled much of High Rock in the First Era, and the Bretons descend from the mixing of Nedic humans with these elves.
The Warp in the West of 3E 417, the event behind Daggerfall's multiple endings, redrew the map of the Iliac Bay and merged dozens of small states into a few larger ones. Orsinium has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries.
High Rock in the games
High Rock is part of Arena's continent-wide map. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996) is set in the Iliac Bay, covering both High Rock and Hammerfell. The Elder Scrolls Online includes Glenumbra, Stormhaven, Rivenspire, Betnikh and the Orc homeland of Wrothgar.
